Individual counseling for adults with a complicated family who want to feel calm, confident, secure, and create lasting change for themselves and the next generation.
You have mixed feelings about your family.
You love them and are grateful for their sacrifices, yet their love of you feels conditional on your performance and whether you follow what they think you should do. You have constantly strived to be the best, but your parents or other family members keep moving the goal posts so that it feels like whatever you achieve is still not enough.
Growing up, your family looked normal or even perfect on the outside. But you had a lot of pressure as a child to take on adult responsibilities for yourself and other family members. It didn’t feel safe to show your emotions or to make mistakes.
Now as an adult, it still doesn’t feel safe. You don’t want to get hurt in your relationships. At work you can’t enjoy your success and instead keep pushing yourself to do more and be perfect. You are stuck on how to navigate your relationship with your parents or other family members. The chronic stress and self-doubt have led to difficulty sleeping, headaches, muscle tension, shame spirals, and feeling not good enough.
This is how attachment wounds and intergenerational trauma shows up. The past affects present day decisions, feelings, relationships, work and health.
Individual therapy to heal from chronic stress and self-doubt of growing up in a complicated family.
I work together with you using my specialized training in Brainspotting and IFS to get unstuck from what you learned in your childhood that don’t serve you anymore and obtain more clarity on what you want from your life, how to feel secure in your relationships, and feel more confident in your decisions. I can help you break the cycle of intergenerational trauma so that you learn how to stop feeling not being good enough or trying to take care of everyone.
In-person and online therapy

I believe in your strength and resiliency even if you no one has ever told you this and at times you may not have felt this way about yourself. You have made it here despite what the world has thrown at you.
I am a warm and compassionate therapist.
I guide my clients with patience and a calm presence.
I teach my clients the science behind why they feel the way they do.
I provide research-based therapies that are brain and body centered. These types of therapy target both the thinking mind and the nervous system so that you can both logically understand and also physically feel the shift in your body.
I offer hope to my clients by helping them uncover their own inner wisdom and who they truly are meant to be. We do this by getting to know the inner critic, the caretaker, the people-pleaser, and other aspects of ourselves that work so hard in running our daily life.
I have specialized training in 10 different types of therapy modalities and blend these together. These include practical skills based ones like Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), as well as inner child parts work of Internal Family Systems (IFS), somatic practices (body based tools of breathwork and movement rooted in traditional Asian practices and Western research on trauma), and neuroscience based trauma processing through Brainspotting.
I blend my lived experience as an Asian American eldest daughter of Taiwanese immigrants who grew up in the South and my clinical expertise from being licensed for over 20 years as mental health therapist.
You can check out a list of my advanced specialized trainings and find out more about my clinical experience here.
I am a collaborative therapist who supports you having choices in what your healing looks like. This means I am open to questions you have and feedback on what is working or not working for you in therapy. We can adjust therapy to what feels most helpful (offering a different type of therapy modality or a different format of therapy).
I can provide a referral to a couples or a family therapist if you would like additional support in your relationships.
If I am not the right fit for you (you need to see a therapist who accepts your insurance or a therapist who offers evening appointments), I can provide you with referrals to other therapists.

My therapy style is very collaborative and active. I combine clinical expert knowledge and over 20 years experience as a licensed therapist with a calm, caring, and authentic presence.
I am extensively trained in specialty trauma treatments and use 10 different therapy modalities: AEDP, Brainspotting, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness and Self-Compassion, Somatic Approaches, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Solution Focused, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I integrate these together with neuroscience.
This means that you have choices and can access the type of therapy that is most beneficial for you. Lasting healing is more likely when we incorporate both brain and body based therapy modalities.

Deciding to get therapy and choosing a therapist is an important decision. I offer free 15-minute consultations so that you can tell me what you would like to achieve from therapy, ask questions, and get a sense of what therapy with me could look like.
The first session is an intake for you to share with me the specifics of your situation and history to determine the best ways to help you achieve what you want to get out of therapy. I believe in transparency so I will share with you guidelines and policies so that there are no surprises.
In the first several sessions, we will start to work on your goals for therapy and get to know each other better. As our sessions progress, we can focus on building up your tools and resources to effectively cope with relationship or work stressors. I can also answer your questions with neuroscience based answers about why you have certain feelings, thoughts, or patterns of behavior.
For those who want to do deeper work to address attachment trauma and how their relationships with their parents affect their career or relationships with friends, partner, spouse, or kids, we can then work together on healing these childhood wounds.
I recommend starting off meeting weekly as research shows that clients generally start noticing improvements and feeling somewhat better after 8-12 sessions. After these initial sessions, we can continue to meet weekly or every 2-3 weeks depending on what is most beneficial for you.

I am not on any health insurance panels and my clients pay privately (also known as self-pay, direct pay, out-of-pocket pay) for my services.
Instead, I provide superbills upon request so that you if you have out-of-network benefits through your insurance plan, you can submit for reimbursement.
My self-pay clients have several important advantages including protecting their privacy and having choices about their therapy.
By paying privately, insurance companies do not have any record of you participating in therapy, nor do they have access to your diagnosis, what was discussed in our sessions, or your therapy notes and records. Your mental health diagnosis does not become part of your official medical record which can affect future insurance coverage and life insurance policies.
Recently, Headway which is a therapy platform connected with insurance companies began requiring therapy clients to provide a biometric facial scan. Some EAP plans like Spring Health automatically use AI to transcribe sessions and everything you say is kept on their platform.
I do not use biometric facial scans, I do not use AI, and I do not record sessions.
An additional advantage to self-pay is that we control our work together and not the insurance company. You and I decide on the length of therapy, what you want to cover in therapy, and what type of therapy works best for you. Insurance companies restrict coverage of which diagnosis they will cover, how many sessions they will cover, and what type of therapy they cover.
Self-pay provides you with an elevated experience and personalized services. Instead of spending hours each week contacting insurance companies and sending them details of what was discussed in your session for them to authorize payment, I can respond to your texts and emails in a timely manner, look into relevant referrals of additional resources for you, and spend my time getting specialized training and certifications so that you get a knowledgeable therapist who is an expert on multiple mental health issues.
Some of my clients choose to submit superbills to their insurance companies for reimbursement of their session fees. I have provided more information in the Out-of-Network section with questions for you to ask your insurance company about this process.
